Historical research rarely progresses in a straight line.Alongside documented facts and verified sources, historians often work with preliminary findings, contextual observations and working hypotheses.

The Research Notes section of this website therefore presents ongoing research related to Charles Nessler (Karl Ludwig Nessler, 1872–1951) and the early history of permanent wave technology.

These notes may include:

• observations about historical locations such as Nessler’s salons in London and New York

• analysis of the social and economic environment in which the permanent wave emerged

• interpretations of advertisements, patents and technical devices

• preliminary conclusions based on archival discoveries
  

Unlike the main documentation sections of this website, which focus on verified historical records, the research notes may occasionally explore possible interpretations or open questions that require further investigation.

The purpose of this section is to make the research process transparent and to provide additional historical context for the development of permanent wave technology and the early beauty industry. As new archival material becomes available, some research notes may later develop into fully documented articles within the main historical sections of this project.
